Understanding these stages – Honeymoon, Adolescence, Independence, and Resolution – is crucial for both parties. It’s about more than just a contract; it’s about building a synergistic relationship where everyone wins.

For Franchisees:

  • Speak Up:  Don’t let issues fester. Document, clarify, and communicate your concerns. Your voice matters!
  • Connect with Support:  Field support representatives are your allies. Build strong working relationships with them.
  • Know Your Contract:  Regularly review your Franchise Agreement. Understanding your obligations and the franchisor’s is key.
  • Communicate Directly:  Utilize direct lines of communication with the franchisor when needed.

For Franchisors:

  • Empower Your Team:  Train your support staff to understand the unique needs of franchisees. They are partners, not employees.
  • Prioritize Communication:  Open communication is vital. Regular face-to-face meetings, even if just twice a year, are essential. Consider a yearly general conference.
  • Foster Partnership:  Remember, franchising is about being “in business for yourself, but not by yourself.”
